2004 for me was a battle of comedies. I really wanted to do a feature and put my vote forward for Shaun of the Dead here, but there is something about SIDEWAYS from Alexander Payne that did it for me, here is my little review to back up my vote…
SIDEWAYS (2004)
Directed by Alexander Payne, Sideways follows his trend for SMART comedies. In 2004 the film was received well by critics and managed to achieve a host of award nominations, including 5 Academy Award Noms including, Best Picture, Best Director, 2x Best Supporting Actress noms and one for Best supporting Actor. The biggest surprise though that Paul Giamatti was snubbed for his role in the film and didn’t get a nod for best Actor.
We follow Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, who is about to get married and living his life off his previous fame as a soap star. He demands one last weekend before the big day and sets his Best friend and Best man, Miles played by Paul Giamatti, the challenge to provide it. Miles, who is not without his own problems; a failed marriage and a book that he keeps putting off finishing, take Jake to wine country where Jake sets about trying to seduce a woman called Maya. While helping Jack to keep his upcoming marriage a secret, Miles falls in love with Stephanie. But what will happen when the two ladies find out the truth about this pair?
The Story for the film is very minimal, it is more character driven than it is plot. There are no poop or fart jokes, there are long periods of dialogue and the humour is subtle and delicate. Saying that in SIDEWAYS there are plenty of moments of comic genius — watching Hayden Church’s character fake a car accident to avoid a chick-beating is hilarious.
Sideways is like a glass of fine wine. It is the perfect blend of ingredients and timing that make this a vintage film. It contains the right amount of comedy, fantastic dialogue and inner struggle. Payne is the undisputed King of making characters that are rich in texture and yet incredibly real. Jack is happy-go-lucky and always makes life mistakes, yet he somehow always seem to come up smelling of roses. Where as Miles wallows in his perceived inadequacies and hardly recognizes that he has a lot of strong points. It is Payne’s masterful juxtaposition of these two contrasting characters that makes SIDEWAYS a more realistic experience.

I never got why this movie was so widely praised. It made me want to see it, but once I did I had no idea what all the fuss was about. It honestly bored me…
I can understand it boring you Nostra, it is not for everyone… for me it was almost perfect!! Hey ho cant win them all huh?
Can I get your film of 2004 for the poll?
I’m find it strange that any Alexender Payne film could bore an audience…but Nostra’s not the only one to tell me they don’t like Sideways. I’m bias of course…for me it is one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Like Scott said, it is richly textured…the characters are so multi-layered while Paul Giamatti’s performance is extraordinary. A truly wonderful film and it is probably the only one I’ve watched three times in one week.
I’m leaning more with Nostra on this one Scott. I felt a bit disappointed with this after hearing so many good things beforehand. It’s a good film but admittedly I should give it another go as I’m normally a big fan of Payne’s films.
Yeah man I know what you mean. Maybe this is just one for me. It hit the nail on the head for me in every way.
What would your top 2004 film be?
Am also in the disappointment camp I’m afraid. Perhaps if I liked wine more I’d appreciate Sideways..?
My picks for 2004 – Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind + Shaun Of The Dead (I also love The Incredibles and Team America : World Police).
I actually really really liked Sideways! I remember it was hilarious due to the fact that it wasn’t the typical humor and the in your face awful jokes like Hangover and Bridesmaids do, but more ironic and suitable for me. I guess it does depend a lot on the taste.. my humor just likes these types of movies much more.
Very surprised by the negative reaction Sideways seems to be getting. I think it’s Payne best work – it is such a beautifully nuanced character piece – great writing, great acting…funny yet downbeat, nostalgic but bittersweet. Truly amazing.
I like Sideways, just not as much as you do. I do love the bromance in the movie. And Thomas Haden Church was hilarious.
Can’t believe I still haven’t seen this yet matey, better rectify that situation soon! I do like the cast and movies about wine.
I didn’t really get this film. Loved Giamatti and Haden Church but the script and story didn’t do that much for me. I really want to see About Schmidt to see if this is just another director (like Wes Anderson) that I just don’t really get.
