Midweek Mumbling – The Lull before the Summer Blockbuster STORM
We are firmly coming out of Award season but what can we do until the Summer Blockbusters arrive? Scott takes a look…
I am starting to sound like a right moaning minny. I mean I wasn’t happy last summer by how bad the blockbusters were, then came award season and I started to get bored and began to long for it all to end.
Last weekend we saw The Artist sweep the board at the Oscars signaling the start of 2012 officially, and now I am moaning about nothing to see in the LIMBO months of March to May.
Just this week I was planning to go to the cinema with my good lady wife as we had some tickets to use up, but I couldn’t find anything on that I hadn’t seen or wanted to see. I ended up on Ghost Rider, which I know has a shocking rating on both IMDb and RT but it was the only thing that I had a slight inkling towards. However through an over sight by yours truly we couldn’t actually see that because it was a 3D only showing and I had 2D tickets. We ended up seeing A Dangerous Method, which was very very dull. At least I had some Twirl Mini’s and diet coke to drown my sorrows.
But when was I ever happy?
Well, there was one month recently. One month that I remember being over run with great films to see. September last year. In that month alone we had DRIVE, Tinker Tailor, Warrior, A Lonely Place to Die, Crazy Stupid Love. All in the space of a couple of weeks. It was amazing. I remember being on an absolute high with it all. Then we got stuck into winter and the releases became a bit of a drought. Don’t get me wrong, there have been some cracking films released this year so far. RAMPART is one I have firmly on my list for this year, Woody Harrelson is stunning as the dirty cop trying to make the best of a bad situation. But we haven’t had a lot to get our teeth into yet.
Now The Oscars have done their thing I am looking forward to it all getting started. I am standing here at the side lines waiting for the first racer to come along, but I am seemingly in for a long wait. I have had a little look through and it looks like we are going to have to wait until the end of April for any of the Blockbusters to arrive. It is only the 29th Feb people!
So what do we do until then?
I guess there is only one thing for it. DIY. I am going to have to tile the bathroom floor I have been threatening to do for about a year. I am going to have to build that brick BBQ I have always wanted. I may have to even decorate the our bedroom so it doesn’t look like we have just moved into our 4 year olds bedroom (which technically we have as we all switch bedrooms around). I guess I am just going to have to man up and wait for May. AND STOP MOANING!
As many of you know, this will not happen. I am not very handy, unless someone puts a trowel in my hand and forces me to do tiling I am not going to do it. I am the worlds best procrastinator.
So I guess I will just have to learn a lesson in patience. I will sit quietly and await something to come and light the flame inside. I will re-watch some films at home and be a good boy.
But is it really going to be a good Summer of films?
Yes I really think it may. We have some crackers, here are the ones I am looking forward to most…
-
The Dark Knight Rises – 20th July
-
The Amazing Spider-Man – 7th July
-
The Avengers – 27th April
-
Men In Black 3 – 25th May
-
Prometheus – 1st June
-
Brave – 13th August
-
Snow White and The Huntsman – 1st June
-
G.I. Joe Retaliation – 22nd June
-
The Bourne Legacy – 17th August
-
Total Recall – 22nd August
Seems a pretty strong line up for the hot and balmy months right? I wonder if I will be posting up a moaning mumble in September about how poor the films actually were?? Knowing me, I would guarantee it.

What are you looking forward to the most? What are you going to do with your time in the Spring lull / limbo? Comment below

I’m glad you reminded me about some – hopefully – great films coming up this year. There’s a few nostalgia releases I’m looking forward to, namely, Men In Black 3 and American Reunion but somehow I know I’ll be ultimately disappointed.
One film I know I will not be disappointed by is Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. That film IS going to be grrrrreeeaattt!
I will be very very very upset if Prometheus isn’t everything we wish for Dan
Excellent news getting on the IMDB hitlist… YET AGAIN!
Some great choices there. Doesn’t seem like summer 2012 will be as jam-packed as 2011, but a handful will be sure to take big bucks.
Can’t wait for PROMETHEUS myself. Very excited for that one.
Thanks Mike! It was a bit of a shock!
Prometheus is my most wanted too!
But what about the fantastic Easter holiday season where we get kids movies thrown at us, left, right and centre?
There is a lot of mediocre stuff out there at the moment. But it should make the theoretically amazing summer blockbuster season feel even more amazing.
Looking forward to pretty much your entire list, plus Brave. Are you feeling not-so secretly smug that we’re getting The Avengers before the big ol’ US of A?
There is alittle amount of smugness in my feelings!!
Thanks Jaina
nothing to see in March, Scottie??? I’m shocked, March this year is the most spectacular cinematic month ever with JOHN CARTER, MIRROR MIRROR, THE LORAX, WRATH OF THE TITANS, MARIGOLD HOTEL, PIRATES BAND OF MISFITS… all the best ones this year
hehe well out of the films you listed I have only a small interest in Pirates… The rest are not my cup of tea at all
I’ll probably go see John Carter, Lorax, and Pirates Band of Misfits out of those. So there’s some decent options out in March.
HEHE I had a shock seeing John Carter this weekend. I actually enjoyed it!
For some reason those low seasons always escape me. Movies keep piling up for me and I never have the time to watch everything I want to. Friday Wuthering Heights will open here and I haven’t yet watched Chronicle, which I’d really like to see. And so on. It’s a constant struggle.
HEH I can see you point. You are lucky there Jessica. It is a struggle, but a good one !
I feel the same way Scott, I haven’t been to a movie theater since last December when I saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And it doesn’t look like I’ll be visiting the cinemas until May 4th when The Avengers finally opens here in the States, you guys are lucky you get to see it a week early. In meantime, I’m catching up on some films I missed in theater last fall, Hugo and Moneyball are some examples. Mission Impossible 4 comes out on BD in April, so that will be a great demo disc.
Also, I’m planning to upgrade my projector to another model, maybe a JVC or the new Epson 3D.
I’m definitely looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers. I’m curious about the Total Recall remake, I’m a huge fan of the original. I don’t have much faith in it though since the screenwriter of the remake is Kurt Wimmer, a good example of hack in Hollywood. The director is Len Wiseman who agreed to make a PG13 Die Hard film, damn him!
Ooh an upgrade? I do love an upgrade. I am very very happy with the 3200, I have no need to go 3D at this time. Too many other things to upgrade… cabling for one!
I am going to stand by Total Recall. I reckon it could be fun!
Hi, Scott and company:
I see a lot of good casts attached to questionable projects between now and summer. I’m hoping ‘Prometheus’ does well. Also ‘The Dark Knight Rises’. As far as I can tell, the Marvel franchise with its up-coming ‘Avengers’ will have to play Catch Up after its less than stellar lead-in, ‘Captain America’.
Don’t know for the life of me why another ‘Men In Black’ film was green lighted and made. Same with ‘Total Recall’. And does the world really need another ‘Transformers’ or installment of ‘G.I. Joe’?
Really looking forward to ‘Brave’, though.
Securing my Soap Box.
Carry on.
HAHAH Sopa Box nicely secured Jack!
I am totally with you on Brave, looks like a brilliant film!
I agree, this spring seems rather boring, with the exception of Hunger Games and 21 Jump Street, which I will most probably go see at the cinema. For the rest, what I will do, and what I suggest you should do, is catch up on classics or movies from the last couple of years you haven’t seen! Have a great spring Scott!
Thanks Diana!! You too… Best dust the BBQ off and burn something
Is there something wrong with me in that I’m not really looking forward to any of these upcoming films?…
Superheroes mostly bore me to tears, and I doubt Prometheus will live up to Alien.
The only films I’m really looking forward to are those by directors I’ve always got time for, such as Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Dupieux, Alfonso Cuaron, Coen Brothers, and those won’t be out until end of the year…
Maybe I should sneak more booze into screenings, my critical faculties melt after a few whiskies.
HAHA Booze in the cinema is amazing. Shame that Dukes only shows the cool films and not the blockbusters… then you could get drunk and enjoy them more? Maybe
Thanks for the comment matey
I don’t mind this upcoming spring lull at all. It just gives me a reason to catch up on some of the films I missed in recent years, as well as classics I have yet to see. Plus not going to the cinema saves me $$$.
Looks like a hell of a summer lineup, though. I can’t wait to see The Dark Knight Rises.
Yes that is a good plan for the period Eric… Maybe I should do the same
I do find it annoying how segmented the movie showing schedule. Nothing in the beginning, blockbusters, and then the arty ones. Wish it was more spread out
It would be nice to be spread out Julian. But I guess they have there reasons and award to look forward to
There’s a lull alright, that’s why I haven’t been to the theaters in nearly a month! I am stoked for Summer blockbuster though, especially w/ that new Avengers trailer, woo hoo!
Can’t believe there’s not trailer for Total Recall, come on, I really want to see that as the footage at Comic-con looks pretty darn cool!
Happy Leap Day, matey!
HAHA Thanks Ruth!
Yeah I saw the same footage at Big Screen, looked great!
Diet Coke? I thought everyone in the UK drank Kia-Ora at theaters? “It’s too orangey for crows!” (sorry… the things I’ve learned from Spaced)
As much as I grumble about all of the hype about The Dark Knight Rises, I really can’t wait to see it and have felt that way since the credits rolled on The Dark Knight. In general, there are a ton of movies this year that I’m really excited about, but I have to admit most of them will be Oscar season flicks- a new Wes Anderson, a new PT Anderson, Lincoln, a whole bunch of gangster movies (I think those are coming out throughout the year)… 2012 has the chops to be an awesome movie year.
Kia Ora? That is so 90s… You have brought back some long lost memories there matey!
Did we say the same thing last year? Did 2011 look like a great year? Probably. I hope I am not disappointed
This many not come as a surprise to you Scott but I font care much for the summer blockbuster season much anyway. Since I live in NZ we get most of the summer movies months after they’ve arrived in the rest of the world, anyway.
This is no surprise at all my friend. And I would not want you to ever change!
I’m sick of Oscar season now, bring on the big summer blockbusters. I love the Oscar films don’t get me wrong but I’m ready for a change of pace
Thanks Dave for the comment. You are so right
I hate most summer blockbusters. They tend to be all special effects and hardly any plot. it’s nice when a good movie like “Midnight in Paris” gets released in the summer.
BTW, I thought “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” was well-acted, but incomprehensible.
And I am sick of having the year divided into just Summer Blockbusters and The Awards Season. There ought to be more to it than that.
Hi Albert, you are right of course. They are all mindless action or hero movies. But I am quite looking forward to it. It has been quite a heavy period of cinema and I am looking forward to it brightening up!
It would be nice to mix it up a little huh?
WooHoo, Scott!!!
I just noticed and used a link on IMDb’s home page to this topic and thread.
Congrats!!!
Thansk Jack!! I am totally in shock that this got picked up so quickly
Congratulations on the IMDB Hit List!
And I can’t tell if I’m really excited about Total Recall or not excited at all.
On the one hand, the original is classic campy gory Arnold flick and the remake’s got Bryan Cranson as the villain.
But, on the other hand I’m not really the hugest Colin Farrell fan (although I liked him in In Bruges) and I’m doubting if this remake will be as over-the-top as the original.
I’ll still end up seeing it though.
Thanks Adam!! And welcome over!
I have faith in the remake. I reckon it is going to be awesome!! (Or not, but fun nonetheless)
Can’t wait for Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus. Nothing can touch them in my mind. But we’ve also got The Hunger Games coming out this month. I just rushed through the book to see what all the fuss is about and it’s absolutely brilliant. Couldn’t put it down. And Jennifer Lawrence is in it. Hope they don’t do too much of a Twilight on it and it’s a shame they’ve gone for a PG but it still should be pretty bloody good judging from the ace book! ooo Bourne Legacy looks very cool too. Lots of Renner with that and The Avengers on the way!
Is it really good? I haven’t read it, but as we know I am not the greatest reader in the world. Maybe I should give it a go, then I may be more excited about the film
Even if it was only The Dark Knight Rises released this summer, it would still be one of the best summers in recent memory. Very much looking forward to how Nolan closes his trilogy.
Yes TDKR is going to be the BIGGY!! I am doing a little dance at my desk right now!
Hey Scott
I think I am most looking forward to Prometheus and the Dark Knight Rises. The more I see of it the less interested I am in The Avengers; I hesitate to see it.
Thanks for the comment my friend. I am glad to see a bit more loving for Prometheus!!
I hated Dangerous Method too, it was so boring and Knightley was just awful in it. 2012 doesn’t look great for the movies, the only movie I’m excited about is Prometheus and that’s in June
Oh Sati. I am gutted there is nothing that really is floating your boat!
I’m looking forward to DKR (obviously) and Prometheus. Other than that, meh.
