For this weeks mumble (and my word is it a mumble) I want to look at the films I have watched in January and ask a question, Am I watching too much?
You will have to excuse me today, I am in a little bit of a lazy mood. The mumble this week is not really a big RANT or OPINION, no it is quite literally me typing while I think to myself. No editing involved, so therefore it may not actually make any sense when read back.
As you may or may not know, I got bought a MoleSkine Film Journal for Christmas this year. I shared some of my customization with you earlier in the year. I was pretty pleased to get the gift, as I cannot really remember what I watched FILM WISE last year at all. I know I saw 110 films released in 2011 but I cannot remember the rest…. It is my age you see. Well the Film Journal, I thought, was the perfect solution to the lacking flaws in my memory. I would be able to count every film I see in 2012, and give them a little review. All good so far. I know there are some cool ONLINE solutions, but I love the analog approach to writing every film up!
Now there is much debate over whether this is the done thing. Lot’s of my friends with the journals are only putting in CINEMA viewings, or FIRST TIMERS, but I wanted to literally get every thought/film/sketch down from this year. So in years to come I can look back at the journal and see exactly what kind of film year I had. Makes sense right?
Well I thought so too. But one thing has come out of this first month with my little journal. I think I may be a little addicted to watching films. As I have logged reviewed and counted everything that has passed in front of my eyes I have seen the figure rocket up. I mean in January I watched 44 films (with only 1 re-watch). Is that a lot?
When i wrote the book and you can see from the following picture, I wanted to see 365 films this year. Which at the time of writing seemed a hell of a lot. But now I am staring down the barrel of 528 films (12 times 44), which sound bonkers to me.
So am I watching too much? Or am I just being a normal film lover.
The last thing I want to happen is this target I have to become a chore. I don’t want to end up watching films just to fulfill my quota. Will this happen?
It is only going to get worse (or better) this month as my family are going to Wales to visit the in-laws for a week, leaving me here to earn money and fend for myself. the last time that happened I ended up watching 16 films in 2 days. So february is looking like a 60 film month. Which in one way sounds very cool, but in the other sounds a bit SAD!! There is an outside world out there isn’t there?
Did I always watch this much? Or is this new now I am logging everything and can see the numbers going up?
Who knows, all i know is that I am broadening my viewing menu. This is thanks to my new-found love of classic cinema. Out of the 44 films watched 14 of them were pre-millennium. Now this may not seem a biggie for most of you, but for me ‘Mr Contemporary’ this is huge. I am pretty sure that last year i would avoid older flicks like the plague, thinking they would bore me, but I have been very pleasantly surprised with what i have found. I am slightly ashamed that I have not done this sooner, but at least I am addressing the fact now huh?
Here is a complete list of the films I saw this month

That’s a lot of movies. I can’t understand how you get time for watching all those movies, even less write about them (even if you don’t write about every movie).
I did a quick calculation and while I’m not entirely sure of the exact date of every movie (some might be from the very last days of December) I think I’ll end up at somewhere around 13, add or take one or two. I think I average on a movie every second day, about one theatre visit a week and the rest are DVD.
While I obviously would like to watch more I simply can’t, at least not if I want to keep up some other interests of mine, which currently include medieval dancing and iaiodo training. Films are wonderful but I think it’s great to see some people in real life too occasionally and stretch some other muscles than the one you’re sitting on…

Thanks for the comment. I did go into 3 a day for a while back in early January….
Medieval Dancing? How cool and different

That’s an impressive number, which I don’t think is extreme. It is something you like and as long as you don’t have the feeling other things suffer in your life I wouldn’t be worried about it. If I look at my own watching (I do use an online service, I’m a bit more modern
(just kidding)) and last month I saw 30 movies. As you know I watch movies that interest me, no matter when they were made.
Enjoy your time alone when the family isn’t there. I know I will probably do the same in a couple of months when I’m home alone for a few days

If you were watching wall-to-wall crap then there’d probably be some cause for concern, but lots of great films on that list!
Were The Third Man & Some Like It Hot first time views for you? Great to hear you’re mixing it up and watching plenty of classics.
I pathetically only saw 12 in Jan. Am also noting which films I see, after reading the Soderbergh list (where he noted everything he saw and read in the course of a year) – http://www.movieline.com/2011/04/12/steven-soderbergh-programs-the-best-double-features-and-8-other-revelations-from-his-art-consumption/

Too many films! Never!
I know there was a period in my life when I finished university and wasn’t working for a few months (and living back home with my Mum) where watching films probably went too far. Ie. staying in and watching films at the expense of socialising or even opening my bedroom curtains. This was a time when I was watching – on average three films a day – most of which would begin at about 10pm and then go on until 5am. ….come to think of it…I miss that time!
But I did keep a diary of films watched for five years between 2002 and 2007 and it is great to look back on that and see the films I’ve seen. It was interesting…I looked at it a few months ago and noticed films in there that I had completely forgotten about. But the diary is a great thing to have – it is great to have an outlet to keep a record of your thoughts, and to document your viewing. And it is especially interesting to look back on in a few years.

Wow Scott that is quite a lot! It’s not something to worry about as long as you enjoy it, it’s when you start thinking that you don’t fancy seeing a film anymore that you need to be concerned! I can quite easily watch 4 films on a Saturday or Sunday without even thinking about it, although 3 films is the most I’ve seen at the cinema in one day.
I love the journal you have and I’ve got a sneaky suspicion may have one stashed away for me for a valentines present! I love how you customised yours but fear mine will be by no means as impressive!

Nothing to be ashamed of at all. I am actually quite jealous! I like you try and cram as much film (and TV drama from time to time) watching as I can around my work/social life but now with things like online streaming (Netflix), Lovefilm and other ways to view – on top of cinema trips and press screenings – I find myself constantly flipping back and forth (when at home) and taking ages to DECIDE what to watch. I’ll put my lovefilm discs off for ages until I’m paying 9.99 per month for two measly discs I’ve had for ages, or I go through them in lightning speed. It really has affected how much I watch compared to how I used to consume four or five years ago.
Good idea re: film diary. I’ve been meaning to do this for ages.

I was having the same problem with LOVEFiLM, I now only use them for game rentals and use the online streaming side for film. But I may change that soon as Netflix is getting all my time!

yes, you IS watching too much, you IS obsessed and possibly incurable, there is no hope for you, I’m afraid, not even a movie diet would help in this serious case of filmania! Repenting for your movie sins might help, though, but only if you go to Vatican… and pope is free for some exorcism.

Man alive that’s a lot of films! How do you find the time? My Blog is my diary; I don’t have the time to see that many films: Orange Wednesdays, a couple at weekends, so I’m able to keep up the reviews. I always make sure to date each post for when I actually saw the film, rather than when I publish.
Of course I don’t write again if I’m re-watching a film, so the Blog isn’t 100% accurate, but still, it’s nowhere near 44 a month!

I honestly do not know how I found the time if I am honest. Sometimes I get a film or two done at work when it is quiet. And at the weekends I get in more!

44 films! My God, yes, you are a terrible human being for watching so much! There’s no way I can compete with that! No fair!
Nah, I kid. I wouldn’t worry about you watching too much. As others have said, as long as you enjoy what you’re doing and you’re not hurting anyone, what’s the problem?
My viewing tends to fluctuate a lot. Just yesterday I looked back over the last few months of movie-watching I’ve done. There was a period where I would watch pretty much two films a days, roughly. Then all of a sudden there’s a gap of two weeks or so where I watched nothing. “Wait, what? What happened th… oh, right, Skyrim was released…”
So I have no schedule or goals for my film-watching. When I’m in a movie-mood, I’ll watch what I can. When something else comes along to occupy my time momentarily, I have no trouble putting the film thing on the backburner for a while.
I saw 17 films for the first time in January. Not 100% on rewatches as I don’t keep track of those, but I think there was about 2 or 3 of them. I use a Swedish movie site to keep track of what I’ve seen when and what score I gave it. Although your journal is certainly far cooler, I like the convenience of keeping it digital.

Hey matey, my problem is actually not watching enough movies. So no, I don’t think you’re watching too much, I mean if you can do it and still enjoy them, then why not? I’m with Emil in that I’m so envious that you can watch that many films and still have time for your blog AND your family. How do you do it, man?
Btw, I LOVE your journal idea! You’ve inspired me matey, I might do that too, taking notes whilst watching films so it helps in writing reviews. Thanks for that!

Thanks matey, you are very kind. The journal is very cool. Although making notes in the cinema is a no-no for me… Firstly it is too dark and blooming hard, secondly I would find it hard to loose myself in the film!

Oh no, I didn’t mean taking notes during the film, I meant to say afterwards so I don’t forget some details when I want to review it later. You’re so right about ‘losing yourself’ in the film, that’s the only way you get the most out of it.

Just like eagles and ammunition. You can never have enough films. The only problem is that there are many, many dull, bad to mediocre films that makes finding a GOOD film that much more enjoyable to discover.

Never too many movies Scott !! And as someone said before, as long as you are maintaining the quality, quantity is never an issue. I saw around 20-25 last month and that is the least I have seen in month. Usually I am around 35 and I know many people who watch way more than me(Apparently, including you.) Well, my friends these days don’t ask me “what are you doing?”, they say “So, which movie??” But that is who we are right??
On a side note, some of my favorites in the list. Before the devil knows, Liberty Valance, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Broken Embraces. Hope you liked them.

Hmm… that seems like a lot on the surface, but I honestly don’t know how many I watch, either. I bet it’s in the ballpark of 40 movies a month. My average weekend will feature 7 or 8 selections, then I’ll watch 1 or 2 during the week. So 4 weeks in a month times 8 to 10 would be 32 to 40 a month.
I guess I’m right there with you, sir. Anyway, what’d you think of The Front Page?

Truffaut set himself the challenge of three films a day during his education period and if you set THAT standard, then you are way under and have no need for guilt or fear – unless of course that you want to feel bad for not seeing enough.

Too much is of course always going to be relative to how much its taking time away from something else you really shouldn’t be neglecting. If your career is really, entirely, completely writing about films then there is no concept of too much. I don’t even disapprove of watching crap since a familiarity with why things are bad or a failure is just as important as a familiarity with what counts as good and accomplished. Its quite revealing how many people say they wouldn’t watch a film because its supposed to suck despite the fact that many of their idols [especially if about filmmaking] say you should watch everything to totally understand what works and what doesn’t.
What did boggle me was 16 films in two days. Dude, thats impressive. I’ve done the same, but only with films I’ve seen so many times I wander around doing other crap barely watching and usually when I’m in insomnia mode and I’m just lolling about the house my brain half asleep. I couldn’t do it actually watching and perceiving the finer details of 8 films a day, thats mental. What the hell were those films?!
The keeping track is the good part. I really wish I’d done this from my teens. When I ‘maintained’ a constant self education [by that I mean like a hawk on a week by week basis I was balancing some old classic films, some genre history films, some new films, some cinema films, some non fiction films and everything in between to constantly be improving one part of my knowledge or another] I was watching alot of important films. At the time it was casual; I would wade through my brother’s Halliwell book for all the ones with high star rating and find them, or I’d get whichever arthouse movie was finally on the shelf in the library after months of it being flagged as mislaid on the system.Over the years I’ve realised many of them don’t get talked about by other people and over the years the lack of talking about em myself mixed with the lack of anyone else talking about em has led me to forgot, like, several hundred films I saw that impressed me at the time and would invoke memories of when I saw them [and probably who I saw them with] that are lost to me now. Trying to prove you used to be comprehensive starts to look embarrassing if you’re constantly forgetting what they were! Keeping a day by day list of what I’m watching is one of my resolutions for the year I’ve started and intend to keep cos its just true innit – in ten years being able to look back and see that the week X was released in cinemas, Y from golden oldies was also watched, as was a boxset of Z’s filmography.
I been using Letterboxd to see if I wanna convert to doing it entirely online, but it irritates me you can’t entirely customise it. Like Ant said above, I’d rather write a diary where you can link to music and tv and books as well as films, letterboxd just allowing films seems a waste of the concept. Know what I mean?

Ahaha well from my perspective, I don’t how you guys see that many movies! Seriously, if I see like 4 movies in a week, I feel like I watched a lot of movies and I usually hover around 2 or 3 most of the time.
One thing I like the most about watching movies is the stage afterward where you let it seep in and you can keep thinking about it for a day (or more). Obviously, some movies are better than others but I usually am very adverse to seeing more than one movie in a day.

That is some impressive work Scott, I am very jealous of all those great films you have fitted in during January. I wouldn’t say it’s excessive though, i try to watch at least one film a day, often two. It’s just the perfect way to unwind after a long day.
It’s great that you are discovering old classics, I wonder how many of today’s so called modern classics will stand the test of time and be watched by future generations?

Thanks Tom. I actually enjoyed it, although I didn’t sound like it. I was just worried as i do have some OCD tendencies

The answer to your question – am I watching too much – is moot, because the answer to a question like that should be “should I be watching more?”
So no, you’re not watching too much!

Wow, 44 films? that is huge- I think I only got to 14 in January. Anyway, I don’t think it’s too much, it all depends on how you choose to spend your free time- if this is what you love to do, go for it! Oh, and I’m happy to see you’re watching classics and older movies, I know you were complaining last year that you weren’t seeing enough of them! Have a great February!

44 movies in a month? wow Scott, that’s a lot,how could you manage to do so? any tips for me?
I’d love to watch that many movie too but I don’t have the time to do it
How do you decide which one to review and which one is not?
Funny thing is,I also started movie list in my blog page.I have been doing a list of books I read since 2009 and haven’t crossed my mind to do it on movies till 2012.

Tips? Hmmmm I dunno, It just happened.
When it comes to review we seem to be sticking to new releases on dvd or cinema at the moment, with a little about the classics. Takes a bit of the stress out of it all!
You have just reminded me I need to start some reading too!!

Ok, that is a bit of a massive number, but too much? Well, can you have too much of something you really enjoy? Maybe. But it’s just like someone who likes collecting something as a hobbie. They may buy a ridiculous amount of somethings in a month.
I’d love to watch wall to wall films every day. But … my addiction to TV and 8 hours of my day being spent at the office stop that from happening.
I will turn into my mum here and say … “I do hope you’re getting some fresh air and stretching your legs from time to time though!”

That’s an impressive list of movies you saw last month! I have been averaging about 20-25 movies per month lately, but I have a feeling that will be going down soon. I’m looking into starting my own business, so that may put a kink or two into my viewing habits. We shall see…

Dude, that is an insane amount of movie watching! How do you do it! You remind of SJP in that film based on the book about that woman who juggles being a mother with work and everyone keeps saying ‘I don’t know how she does it!’ Iheard the film is crap but that’s how I feel about you right now Scott.
Kudos for facing your fear of classic movies, that b&w thing can be quite the hurdle to get over but once you do I think you’ll agree it’s well worth it. BTW, nice diary, I have something similar myself, not sure it’s moleskin though, how posh!

That’s bloody impressive and only worrying if the enjoyment is begin sucked out of it. I watched 26 in January and after seeing your post about a journal, did start doing just that. It’s not moleskin but I’m enjoying it nonetheless. I only managed 26 because I had a day off work sick with flu during which I watched 4 films and then a flight to NY during which I watched another three. I say keep up the bloody good work! You are rapidly becoming my hero!

Haha good work mate! I just bought me one of those Moleskine Journals. Can’t wait for it to be delivered so I can start filling it out! I saw 63 films in January, which for me is a hell of a lot, and not very many of them were post-2000! hahaha that’s just me. Well done mate

First off i would like to say that is a very solid list of films. Congrats for getting around to seeing that many movies in a month. I would also like to say i am currently doing the same sort of thing.
I guess you could say my new years resoultion was to watch more movies. I set my self a challenge to watch 400 movies this year ( i was going to do 365 but seemed to little, and then i was going to do 800 but with school and other things in life that just seemed like to many) With in that 400, i am going to try and keep the re-watches down to like 80 movies or so, so that it forces me to see older movies that i have not.
Going to cut this off before i go on to long, but i just wanted to say good luck to you, and hopefully you will keep updating your list as the months go by. Always intrested in seeing what everyone else is watching.
