New Year Lists – FRC Team’s Top Films of 2011
The end is nigh, 2012 is upon us and we are all looking back at the films we have seen this year. Today we have all huddled together to bring you our individual Top 5 Films of the year. Enjoy…
We were going to have our Tops and Bottoms in this post but it just got too long so for the last two posts of the year we are going to reflect on our favourite films from 2011, then tomorrow we will look at the ones that we were most disappointed with.
What I have found interesting is that we haven’t agreed that much on the films we loved or on the films we hated. This is the beauty of the medium, that it has the ability to completely split and divide opinion and pretty much there is no wrong or right, well apart from when it comes to Cowboys and Aliens HAHAHA
We made it a rule that the films had to be of this year, release wise, much to my disgust as I have seen a few that are not released until 2012 and now will have to leave them off (SHAME to name one). But MOB rules, so, without further a do here are the FRC Team’s Top 5 Films of 2011…
Scott Lawlor
5 – Rise of The Planet of the Apes
Even though there should be a rule about the amount of times you can use the term ‘of the’ in a title, RISE seemed to come out of nowhere. In a summer that was full of CASH COW Blockbusters (see my bottom 5 tomorrow) RISE was fresh and brilliant. The Mo-Cap Performance by all involved but in particular Andy Serkis set the bar very high for any CGI based effects for years to come. I really hope this wins an Oscar for FX this year, because my word does it deserve it.
4 -Incendies
This is a very late entry to my top 5, in fact I only got to see this two weeks ago. But, my word is it deserving of a place. The story is epic and rolling and it comes with a reveal that hits you like a right hook from Mike Tyson. If i think about it now I STILL get goosebumps. If you haven’t seen this film yet, I urge you to rent/buy/borrow/steal (ok not steal) and get it in your life. It is long, but very worth it.
3 – The Turin Horse
OK, so this one hasn’t had a wide release. In fact I doubt most people will get to experience this as it should be experienced, which is such a shame. Watching this at home on your TV is never going to be the same as seeing it on a huge screen in a silent and dark room. My good friend Neil Mitchell saw it with me this year at Cine-City and he described it as like being hit over the head with a fine piece of art-house wood, and I cannot beat that. It is long, slow, monotonous and a complete masterpiece.
2 – The Artist
I have a feeling this is a film that is going to be at the top of a lot of people’s lists this year, if they have been lucky enough to see it. It is sweet, charming and a perfect homage to a beautiful age. Dujardin is handsome and witty and Bejo is highly attractive and seductive, yet still with amazing charm. Stunning, and all without any words (well mostly).
1 – Drive
All of the films in my Top 5 have left me speechless at the end, and have left me wanting more. None more so than DRIVE. I still listen to the soundtrack daily and if I play it whilst driving I tend to grip the wheel harder and pull over and turn my lights off, whilst looking like I am wondering if I left the iron on. In all seriousness Gosling and Winding-Refn’s film is probably heading up my all time Top List and not just for 2011. Awesome.
Mike Williams
5 – Take Shelter
The sort of film M.Night Shayamlan made in his prime. Superb performances from Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, surely included for Oscar nominations.
4 – Senna
An unmissable documentary that is craftily cut and brilliantly edited from so much archive footage regardless of your interest in F1. Deep and tragic, charming and funny all rolled into one. I dare you not to shed a tear even though you know the ending.
3 – The Artist
Brave and something a little different, this is the most charming film of the year, plus Uggie the dog is a gem: it tops the Best Performance by Animal Oscar category for sure….
2 – Rise of the Planet of the Apes
The biggest surprise of the summer, and indeed the year, where WETA and Andy Serkis take motion capture to the next level. Thrilling and beautiful to watch, roll on a sequel!
1 – Drive
Only viewed once so far, I instantly fell in love with every aspect of this film. The setting, the subtlety, the characters and OF COURSE the soundtrack. It blew me away, I just hope it stands up to multiple Blu-ray watches come the end of January.
Teri Williams
5 – We Need To Talk About Kevin
A spectacular adaptation of one of my favourite books from the last ten years. I was lucky enough to meet author Lionel Shriver before the film reached audiences, who had just seen a rough cut of it before its release – and I trusted her when she said it was brilliant (and also when she said you’d be an idiot/psychotic to want to read or see it again). Ezra Miller is a future star, who really brings the psychological complications of Kevin’s character to life, and shines particularly in the last act of the film alongside costar and queen of my heart Tilda Swinton.
4 – Red State
Opinion on this film have been polarized, to say the least. Marmite feature of the year? Perhaps. Thing is, I loved it – I thought it was absurd, funny, well-acted (particularly from one-to-watch Kyle Gallner) and compelling. Its rough and almost boisterous camera work worked well with the energetic script, and in my opinion it’s Kevin Smith’s best film since Dogma.
3 – The Skin I Live In
There’s nothing - nothing - I love more than a bit of melodrama. I adore Almodovar’s penchant for soapy histrionics, and have been a big fan of his work for years. The Skin I Live In did not disappoint – it’s over the top, bombastic and stayed with me for days after viewing. Antonio Banderas, reunited with his Labyrinth of Passion/Law of Desire/Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! et al director, is perfectly cast as the twisted, vengeful Dr. Ledgard in a morally ambiguous tale of love, revenge and gender identity.
2 – Black Swan
Black Swan was released in the UK at the beginning of the year – I couldn’t possibly leave it off of my list. I’m a huge Aronofsky fan and I enjoy his use of fantasy and the way he plays with the limits (read: often limitless) of the human mind. His portrayal of mental illness is at once sensitive and unashamed. Natalie Portman is luminous.
1 – Melancholia
By far the most beautiful film I’ve seen in 2011 – maybe even ever, if Death In Venice didn’t exist. Another movie with mental illness as a primary focus, Melancholia is a heady mix of family melodrama and apocalyptic science fiction on a grand, operatic scale. Split into three acts, this Lars Von Trier vehicle is haunting and stunning to look at, and despite its far-fetched premise, is one of the most realistic portrayals of the fear of death.
Tom Bielby
5 – The man from nowhere
The Man from Nowhere debuted at the Korean film festival in London back in 2010 but was forgotten about and not released to wider audiences until its debut on dvd in April this year, which is why I am including it in my best of 2011 list. When I finally got my hands on the dvd I couldn’t believe that an amazing revenge thriller such as this was not given a nationwide release, the action sequences are phenomenal, the story is riveting and the cinematography is easily on par with some of the best Korean films out there. Then again, we live in a world where the best of foreign and art house cinema are often overlooked to provide extra screens for the latest blockbuster, which is a great shame that they are not seen by wider audiences but does allow for a greater sense of satisfaction when it feels like you have discovered a forgotten gem. Featuring a storyline not too dissimilar from Taken, a man with a past shrouded in mystery is determined to rescue a young girl who is kidnapped during the aftermath of a botched drug deal. Nobody does revenge like the Koreans, and although the extreme violence may be too much for some people to stomach, fans of action thrillers need this film in their collection.
4 – The Woman
Ever since I heard of the incident at Sundance Festival where a woman fainted and a man was kicked out of the screening for ranting about how disgustingly misogynistic this Canadian horror was I knew that I had to see it. I love controversial horror movies and films that push the boundaries of extreme cinema and The Woman certainly lived up to its reputation with a twisted storyline not too far removed from last year’s Australian gem ‘The Loved Ones’. When out hunting, the father of three children encounters a strange woman dressed in tattered rags who is living in the wild. Choosing to take it upon himself to introduce her back into society he captures her and keeps her captive in order to educate her, using some rather suspect methods. This is far more than just another torture porn horror, the disturbing storyline throws up countless surprises and the black comedy throughout ensures you will return for repeat viewings. Again, not one for the faint hearted, but this was a standout horror of 2011 that turned my stomach and left me on the edge of the seat, and there are not many horrors capable of that these days.
3 – Attack the Block
This year has seen the release of some very ambitious debut films from British directors, and it was a close call between including this or Submarine, and as much as I loved Ayoade’s effort, Attack the Block pipped it to the post with Joe Cornish’s throwback to eighties horror comedies exceeding all of my expectations. An epic soundtrack, perfectly cast characters and a cleverly designed creature all combined to make this thrilling sc-fi stand out from the crowd. Cornish did an excellent job at fine tuning the character arc of the gang of chavs who have to defend their homes from an alien invasion; whilst the audience initially dislike the characters due to their cowardly actions it was impossible to make it through to the end of the film without eventually routing for them to succeed. I hope that Cornish’s next foray into film-making will be as original as this, as it was great to see that his unique brand of humour translated to the big screen with ease.
2 – Drive
2011 will be remembered as the year when it became completely acceptable to have a man crush on Ryan Gosling, with people being proud to openly admit their love for the man! He has had a fantastic career so far but Drive came along and just blew my mind, his performance was the epitome of coolness and the synth heavy soundtrack oozed with eighties charm that fitted perfectly with Refn’s distinct directorial style. Gosling plays a stunt driver who becomes involved in a seedy underworld after partaking in a number of heists and will stop at nothing to protect the beautiful but troubled young mother he falls for her. All the men wanted to be him, and all the women wanted to be with him. Mr Gosling, I salute you.
1 – Tyrannosaur
Paddy Considine’s directorial debut was a stunning example of an actor who successfully moved behind the camera to create what was arguably the most powerful film of the year. Clearly drawing from his experiences working with Shane Meadows on a number of thought-provoking dramas tinged in gritty realism, Considine has delivered a masterpiece that left audiences reeling from the violent brutality of the characters he created. Tyrannosaur marks Considine as a director to watch out for in the future, and if he can match or even exceed its intensity in the future then he will be destined for greatness. All three main actors put in fantastic performances that will undoubtedly be overlooked at the Oscars but deserve recognition, with Olivia Colman making the successful transition from the likes of Peep Show on the small screen to the lead role in a feature film with ease. If you missed Tyrannosaur in the cinemas, go and spend your Christmas money on it, I can ensure you that it will be a decision you won’t regret.
As you can see we have quite a mix of FAVOURITES from the year, which for a team I think is really nice. It means you are never going to get a one-sided view. But what were our least favourite film? Make sure you tune in tomorrow for the next instalment.
What are your favourite 2011 films? Did we miss any or get any wildly wrong? Comment below…

Would you believe it that out of all the movies mentioned above I’ve only seen 3. Shameful I know. Oh well, so is life

Oh, there are so many lovely choices here! Lots of love for Drive for instance, which I definitely agree with. And I loved your late falling-in-love with Incendies. It was great indeed. Melancholia, especially the end scene, is one that will rest in my memory forever. I really thought The Skin I Live in was brilliant.
I haven’t had the chance to see The Artist, Senna or Take Shelter, but they all seem interesting. I hope I’ll get the chance eventually. It’s so frustrating this time of the year when you’re not on the same page as everyone else. For this reason it was nice to see Black Swan included. The movie year 2011 looks quite different depending on which side of the ocean you live on.

Hi Jessica,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment. I really can’t wait for a Blu-Ray release of Melancholia. I missed it at the cinema.
Incendies is amazing and deserves more attention than it has had.

It’s good to see there’s at least one film I haven’t seen in everyone else’s top five lists. Now I know what I will be spending my xmas money on!

HAHA Your list is certainly the most diverse my friend. I am far too mainstream for my own good. But hey that is me all over!! Middle-Aged and Mainstream!! HAHA

30 Dec 2011, 2:31 pm
Haha. You are just so mainstream, Scott. I bet you have the Bela Tarr action figures and Incendies Happy Meal set. It’s people like you who help independent cinema thrive. I hope you feel ashamed.

HAHA OK OK I see your point.
I really want to do a bit more Bela Tarr. Amazing Director.

Great lists! Nice range. It disgusts me that if I make a 2011 top list, I will most likely have to update it every 5 mins after finally seeing many of these films. Drive, Incendies, Tyrannosaur and The Artist sound most intriguing but I’m also desperate to see Red State! Keep up the great work, sounds like y’all have some excellent taste!

Oh Pete, you are in for some real treats there matey. Drive is amazing, and Incendies is Haunting. Tyrannosaur is probably the darkest film I have seen all year…
Thanks for the lovely comment my friend

Nice selection.
I need to watch Drive again, as I enjoyed it the first time but wasn’t blown away.

The Future
127 Hours
Melancholia
Howl (or Troll Hunter… I can’t decide)

I liked Super. Pretty violent, maybe too much for me. I haven’t seen The Future, but I have heard mixed things… so it is great to see a positive view!

There’s a ton of films I haven’t seen, so I was apprehensive about making a list. I seem to have spent most of this year playing Xbox games. D’oh.
As for The Future, I love everything Mirada July does, but plenty of people can’t stand her. I’d urge you to see her earlier film – You And Me And Everyone We Know. I loved it to bits, a proper feel-good movie, but with plenty of dark wrongness.

What a cool bunch of lists. Some great stuff I’ve seen, some I want to, and some I haven’t heard of before. Glad to see so much love for Drive, as it would be my current pick for best of 2011. Black Swan is brilliant too, and Attack the Block was a pleasant surprise. Nice stuff, and a reminded that I have plenty to look forward to in the coming months as I try to play catch-up with the year’s releases.

I have a LOT of 2011 movies to catch up on. I’m most excited about Take Shelter, but also want to see Drive and We Need to Talk About Kevin. And Melancholia too, for that matter.
I’m really happy to see Apes getting a lot of love here. I thought it was the best of the summer, and one of the better films of the year. I don’t see nearly enough in theaters to make a list like this, but I can guarantee it’d be in a top 5 if I made one. And you’re all right about what you say- it came out of nowhere. I saw the trailer and literally rolled my eyes. Then, it started getting strong reviews and I put aside my preconceptions… and I am so glad that I did.
